How is Joe’s Shanghai? Chinatown, Manhattan, New York
Best Family Style Soup Dumplings in Manhattan, NYC
Joe’s Shanghai is a spacious family-style Chinese restaurant in Manhattan, NY. They’re known as they have the best soup dumplings in New York City. Deep flavors, rich soup, and an ultimate Chinese cuisine experience. And the dumplings aren’t small either. Nice big, flavorful and so juicy.
We went there around 05:30 pm and waited in the queue for 30 minutes. And then we first ordered the pork and crab soup dumplings and they were terrific! (This is also what you MUST do when you enter Joe’s Shanghai.)
How You Should Eat the Soup Dumplings on Joe’s Shanghai?
As soon as the dumplings arrive you get one soup dumpling on your spoon and hit the sauces (chili oil etc.) on it as you like. Then you bite the top of the soup dumpling carefully. You should be very careful. Because the soup inside the dumpling is really hot. There you go. You’ll face the “juice/soup” in the dumpling. At this point, you can add extra sauces which are already served on the table. Yes, it’s time to suck the juices inside the dumpling. And “Hooza!”
We ordered the soup dumplings, chicken lo mein (Chicken Pan Fried Noodles), Shanghai Fried Rice, and crispy shredded beef (which was like deep-fried slices of beef served in a semi-sweet sauce- amazing), both of which are staples of the restaurant. Every single thing was amazing and the prices were great. If you don’t want to order the other dishes try Peking duck with the soup dumplings.
In the end, juicy and very flavorful oranges are served as dessert. When you eat them, you won’t forget them.
We were a party of 4 and 18% gratuity was added without any heads up. So avoid double tipping.
Like many Chinatown places, Joe’s Shanghai is also cash only. (They have an ATM there though.)
Beware, IT’S THE BEST soup dumpling you will get in NYC. And make sure, if you want to visit Chinatown, make Joe’s Shanghai your top priority restaurant. It’ll be one of the best Chinese food experiences in your life.
