Pho Very Good Budapest: Vietnamese Soup Near Kálvin Tér
At Pho Very Good near Kálvin tér, beef pho was our pick over the large chicken version. We also enjoyed a rice-noodle dish listed as Pad Thai. The small restaurant gave us the hot bowl of soup we wanted after several lángos meals, although the wait and the room left us with a mixed verdict.
We visited during our September 2026 Budapest trip. Its location near our son Ali Burak’s university was one reason to stop; memories of pho we had eaten in Vietnam were another. Here is what we ordered and what we would choose next time.

A small restaurant near Kálvin tér
Pho Very Good is on Királyi Pál utca, a useful location when you are around Kálvin tér. Inside, almost everything seemed to revolve around one woman: taking orders, going into the kitchen, bringing dishes out, handling payment and keeping up with the washing-up.

There was another person inside, but she was at the center of the activity. She was lively and warm, asking whether we liked the food, thanking us and inviting us back. That busy, personal atmosphere reminded us of our Vietnam trip.
The room felt rough around the edges, and its cleanliness and organization did not impress us during our visit. We appreciated her warmth and effort, while still noticing those shortcomings.

Large chicken pho: plenty of noodles, less chicken than we wanted
We had enjoyed chicken pho in Vietnam, so we ordered the large version here. The bowl held broad rice noodles, shredded chicken and fresh greens. It really was a large bowl; finishing it was a task in itself.

The amount of chicken felt modest against that volume. We found the noodles fine, but the whole bowl did not bring back the flavor of the chicken pho we remembered from Vietnam. If choosing the size again, we would go for regular.
Size alone was not what we wanted from the meal. The balance between the broth, noodles and meat mattered more, and our other orders suited us better.
Seasoning the soup at the table
Soy sauce, sriracha and fish sauce were on the table. Adding them helped us bring the soup closer to our own taste and a little closer to the flavors we remembered.

It reminded us of finishing a bowl of tripe soup in Türkiye with garlic, vinegar and chili: that small pleasure of adjusting your own bowl. The sauces made ours more enjoyable.
We also liked the fresh coriander in the chicken pho. If that is a herb you prefer to avoid, mention it when ordering and ask whether it can be left out or served separately.
Beef pho and the noodle dish were our favorites
Of the two soups at our table, we preferred the beef pho. That would be our choice for another visit, in the regular size.
We also tried a rice-noodle dish listed on the menu as Pad Thai. It did not resemble the Thai-style pad thai we knew, but we enjoyed it as a noodle dish in its own right. It appealed to us more than the chicken pho.

That leaves a straightforward order recommendation from our table: regular beef pho if you want soup, or the noodle dish if you want something different.
Allow time for the food
We had imagined a quick meal, but waited around 20–25 minutes for the food. With so much of the work appearing to rest on one person, the pace made sense once we watched the room.
If you are heading to a class or an appointment, ask about the wait before ordering. Our stop suited a more flexible schedule than the quick lunch we had planned.
Our verdict: filling, affordable and uneven
We regarded Pho Very Good as an affordable place to fill up. The beef pho and noodles were the stronger orders for us; the large chicken bowl stood out more for volume than for its meat content.
Compared with the pho we had eaten in Vietnam, this was a less memorable meal. Still, a hot bowl of soup made a welcome change during our Budapest trip, and the woman’s warmth stayed with us alongside the food.
We paid for our own meal. Our visit notes do not include an exact bill total, so we keep the price judgment to how it felt at the time.
