Langos Papi Budapest: Why We Preferred Its Classic Lángos

Langos Papi became our favorite of the two lángos places we tried in Budapest. At this small shop on Madách Imre út, we both ordered the classic combination of garlic, sour cream and grated cheese. The wider dough, thin upturned edges and, above all, the garlic balance made the difference for us.

We had enjoyed our first lángos at Krumplis on Váci utca. This second stop made us want to keep trying it elsewhere whenever we returned to Budapest. Langos Papi itself went straight onto our return list.

Our visit was in September 2026. For the rest of the places we ate, see our Budapest food guide.

A small street-food stop beyond the archway

On the way in, we came through a square and then an arched passage beneath a building. Beyond it were small places to eat side by side, the kind of setting where you can stop for a bite and then continue walking. Langos Papi fitted naturally into that scene.

The seating we saw consisted of small tables outside. For us, that was part of the appeal: a short, informal food stop during a day in the city. If indoor seating matters to your plans, check with the business before going.

What we ate: the Hungarian Classic

We ordered the same lángos twice, one each. Both came with sour cream, grated cheese and garlic, and we had two beers alongside. At Krumplis we had compared different toppings; here, we wanted two portions of the classic.

Garlic, sour cream and cheese: the combination we would order again.

The garlic was what we liked most. Together with the dough, sour cream and cheese, it came together exactly as we wanted. We did not feel any need to add another topping. There was already enough going on.

If lángos is new to you, picture a broad piece of fried dough with savory toppings. It can look a little like a pizza, but the base is fried rather than baked. To us, it recalled pişi, the fried dough we know from Turkish breakfasts, opened out into a much wider shape. Our guide to what to eat in Hungary puts lángos alongside the country’s other dishes and street foods.

Langos Papi vs Krumplis: why we preferred Papi

Our first stop had been Krumplis Lángos on Váci utca, where we tried a classic and a sausage-and-red-onion version. We enjoyed both. At Langos Papi, the dough looked noticeably wider and larger, with thinner edges curling upward.

That shape, together with the garlic balance, tipped the comparison. Of the two shops we visited, Langos Papi was our choice.

Our verdict Our favorite of the two We enjoyed it too

If you want to compare lángos shops yourself, ordering the same classic combination makes the differences easier to notice. The dough and garlic have more room to speak when you are not changing all the toppings at the same time.

Prices and value from our September visit

The Hungarian Classic was 2,600 HUF on the September 2026 menu, compared with 3,000 HUF for the classic we ate at Krumplis. Two classics at Papi therefore came to 5,200 HUF before drinks. We paid for our visit ourselves.

The larger portion, lower listed price and garlic balance we preferred made Papi satisfying on value as well as taste. That is our comparison of those two visits, using the menus we recorded at the time.

For reference, our trip notes converted 2,600 HUF to approximately US$8.02 and 5,200 HUF to US$16.03, using the recorded September 29, 2026 rate of 324.30 HUF per US dollar. These are historical conversions, not today’s exchange rate. Check the current menu before visiting.

What we would order next time

We would happily order the classic again: garlic, sour cream and grated cheese. Lángos can take many different toppings, but at Papi this combination felt complete to us.

Our first lángos experience had made us like the dish. The second made us realize we were hooked. We now want to try another version whenever we return to Budapest, while keeping Langos Papi as a place we already know we would revisit.
