BBQWhere to Eat

Galeto Sat’s Rio

We went to Galeto Sat’s in Copacabana twice, and found a queue both times. Eventually, with our Brazil travel companion Ozan, we ordered chicken to take away and ate it outside with two Brahma beers. The charcoal-grilled chicken, brushed with garlic sauce as it cooked, was worth coming back for. Watching the cook at the fire was part of the pleasure.

To fit this stop into a wider trip, see our Rio de Janeiro food guide, which also covers steak sandwiches, açaí and a quick coffee stop.

One reason we wanted to visit was that Anthony Bourdain had eaten here too. VEJA Rio’s reporting records his visit. Once we looked inside, the grill held our attention: watching the cook handle the chicken and warm the bread made us want to order.

A boteco is a neighbourhood bar where food, beer and conversation share the room. Galeto Sat’s made that easy to understand. Old tables, cupboards and wooden seats were part of the setting. In July 2022, Rio City Hall recognised the Copacabana bar as cultural heritage and included it in the city’s circuit of historic botequins.

This is the Copacabana restaurant, next to Cervantes, on Rua Barata Ribeiro. Keep that address in mind when planning your visit: Galeto Sat’s also has other branches. Our story here is about trying to find space in this particular small dining room.

Two evenings, the same queue

On our first evening, the queue stretched outside. Inside looked crowded and noisy, with limited seating. There was no reservation option when we visited, and we were looking at an estimated 40–50-minute wait. We did not stay in line that night.

We returned the next day and found another queue. This time we moved towards the bar, watched the food being prepared and filmed the action. After spending time beside the grill, leaving without eating the chicken felt increasingly unlikely.

The cook controls the chicken’s distance from the fire

Half chickens were threaded onto skewers, held horizontally over the charcoal. The skewer ends rested in slots opposite the grill. The cook moved one down, lifted another up and managed the cooking by changing each chicken’s distance from the heat.

He kept brushing the chickens with a garlicky, seasoned sauce. There was constant attention: moving the skewers, checking them and basting again. The same relationship between meat, skewers and fire appears elsewhere in Brazilian barbecue, but here the chicken was the centre of the work.

That judgement at the grill was what kept us watching. The sauce mattered, but so did knowing when each skewer needed to move closer to the heat.

Garlic bread and chicken hearts at the grill

Bread went onto skewers too. The cook heated it over the fire, then cut it into a basket with scissors. He brushed the pieces with warm, lemony garlic sauce from a container beside the grill, where we had also seen chicken fat dripping.

We watched chicken hearts cooking as well, held between the two sides of a wire grill and turned over the heat. In Portuguese, you may see them called coração de galinha, while garlic bread is pão de alho. The chicken was what we ate that day; the bread and hearts were among the preparations we watched.

Takeaway chicken, two beers and a spot outside

On our last day with Ozan in Brazil, we decided we were going to eat here. Instead of waiting for a table, we asked for an order we could eat outside. We took the chicken away and ordered two Brahma beers alongside it.

We ate at the bar-like waiting area by the entrance. We had not managed to sit at a proper table, but we had finally tasted the chicken. It was delicious. After returning and watching the work at the grill, we were glad we had not left without trying it.

That busy evening, the two beers and the chicken outside the door are how we remember Galeto Sat’s.

Our visit appears in our Rio de Janeiro food episode, with the Galeto Sat’s section starting at 13:15. The video is in Turkish; the grill, skewers and setting can be seen in the footage.

Our take

We would return for the chicken and for the chance to watch this cooking setup at work. The room was small and loud, the wooden furniture well used, and the grill constantly busy. If your priority is a quiet meal at a spacious table, the restaurant we encountered at peak time may be a difficult fit.

For anyone interested in charcoal cooking, standing near the bar was a rewarding part of the visit. If you cannot get a table, ask whether takeaway and eating outside are possible that day. That solution worked for us.
