Best Döner in Kadıköy, Istanbul

For döner in Kadıköy, start with Tatar Salim for a seated meal in the market, 1971Döner for a sandwich in soft tırnak pide, or Barış Büfe for a plain wrap on Bağdat Caddesi. Our nine addresses cover the centre as well as Sahrayıcedit, Caddebostan, Suadiye and Koşuyolu.

Quick choice: Tatar Salim is first on our list. Choose 1971 for its bread and spiced character, or Korkmaz for a short stop in Moda. Emin Usta’s market stall is a separate outing that needs a phone check before you travel. This is a guide to the wider Kadıköy district; the restaurants are not all within walking distance of the ferry.

The focus here is et döner, meat döner rather than chicken. Yaprak means leaf-like slices; dürüm is a flatbread wrap; ekmek arası means in bread; and porsiyon is a plated portion. A büfe is a small snack shop or counter, rather than an all-you-can-eat buffet. For addresses elsewhere in the city, see our Istanbul döner guide.

Our favourite döner stops

1. Tatar Salim — Kadıköy market

Tatar Salim döner restaurant in Kadıköy

Tatar Salim is our first choice for a sit-down döner meal in central Kadıköy. We have followed the brand for years, written about it repeatedly and filmed inside its kitchen. Thinly sliced meat, tandır lavaş and thoughtfully chosen accompaniments make the meal feel complete.

On our Caddebostan visit, the supporting dishes mattered as much as the meat: lentil soup made with bone broth, separate grains of rice, seasonal salad and slightly tangy ayran made with the restaurant’s yoghurt. Those memories belong to that branch, but explain why we keep following Tatar Salim. The address listed here is the Kadıköy market branch, convenient for visitors exploring the centre.

2. Dönerci Emin Usta — Sahrayıcedit

Meat döner at Emin Usta’s Sahrayıcedit market stall

Friends introduced us to Emin Usta after we had spent years living around the very market where he worked. Discovering his modest stall so late became a running joke in our original article. What stayed with us was the meat itself: a direct, generous döner that did not need a grand dining room to make an impression.

One rainy visit also left a lasting memory. When bread and drinking straws got wet, Emin Usta stopped serving, gave away the bread that had stayed dry and packed up. Our order is simple: meat döner in fresh bread with tomato, pepper, parsley and onion. This entry refers to the market stall. Call to confirm its current day and position before travelling; we have not reconfirmed the old weekly market timetable.

Choose it for: Market-stall döner in bread.

3. 1971Döner — Nail Bey Sokak

Meat döner cooking on the spit at 1971Döner in Kadıköy

At 1971Döner, watching the meat being sliced behind the shop window is part of the appeal. We tried its döner in tırnak pide, a soft flatbread marked with fingertip indentations. Warm bread and a touch of spring onion made the sandwich different from an ordinary döner in a bread roll.

Our notes describe meat that was neither dry nor excessively fatty, with a lightly sweet, spiced flavour that reminded us of cardamom. That is a tasting impression, rather than a claim about a confirmed ingredient. The fresh ayran had mint-like notes. Choose this small counter-style stop for its bread and distinctive seasoning.

4. Kasabım Döner — Caddebostan

Döner on the spit at Kasabım Döner in Caddebostan

Kasabım on Caddebostan İskele Sokak suits a seated meal built around a portion of döner. Its portion service includes tandır lavaş, home-style chips, mixed pickled peppers and seasonal salad. That combination gives you several ways to build each bite, from a piece of meat wrapped in bread to a mouthful with something sharp alongside.

The menu also offers wraps, döner over rice and İskender. It is a useful option when people at the same table want different formats. The reason to choose the portion here is the meal around the meat, as well as the meat itself.

Choose it for: A portion with several accompaniments.

5. Metet Közde Döner — Suadiye

A plate of döner photographed at Metet’s Kuzguncuk branch
Döner photographed at Metet’s Kuzguncuk branch; the address below is Suadiye.

We first wrote about Metet after visiting its Kuzguncuk restaurant, where we liked the lightly smoky character of the charcoal-cooked döner. The leaf-like slices were not overwhelmingly fatty, and that visit established the brand’s place in our food-writing archive. For this Kadıköy guide, the address is Metet’s Suadiye branch.

Our preferred order is a portion with lavaş: taste the meat on its own first, then wrap a little in the bread. Home-style chips, buffalo yoghurt and pickled peppers were accompaniments we remembered from Kuzguncuk. The photograph above and those tasting notes come from that visit; they are not presented as a visit to Suadiye.

6. Dönerci Celal Usta — Koşuyolu

Döner with rice and lavaş at Celal Usta in Koşuyolu

Celal Usta is another name from our wider Istanbul döner writing. Our earlier notes from the Ümraniye restaurant focused on thinly sliced meat that retained its moisture and a balanced amount of fat. The branch in this guide is on Muhittin Üstündağ Caddesi in Koşuyolu.

At Koşuyolu, choose between a portion, a wrap, tombik bread or döner over rice. A portion suits a slower meal, while a wrap or rounded tombik bread brings meat and bread together. It is a useful choice when you are staying or spending time in Koşuyolu rather than around Kadıköy’s ferry piers.

Choose it for: Portion, wrap, tombik or rice.

7. Şimşek Döner — Altıyol

Şimşek Döner in Kadıköy

Şimşek is one of the longstanding döner names around Altıyol. Its position by Kuşdili Caddesi makes it easy to fit a meal into shopping or everyday errands in central Kadıköy. This is the familiar neighbourhood döner-shop option in the list.

Choose plain döner when you want the meat to lead, or İskender when you want the combination of meat, pide, yoghurt and sauce. It is a practical stop if your day already takes you through Altıyol.

Choose it for: Plain meat döner or İskender.

8. Barış Büfe — Şaşkınbakkal

Meat döner at Barış Büfe on Bağdat Caddesi

Barış Büfe became one of our Bağdat Caddesi favourites through repeat visits. It is a familiar stop that comes to mind when we find ourselves on the avenue around lunchtime, with the easy conversation and everyday rhythm of a neighbourhood büfe.

Our order has stayed the same: a plain meat döner wrap with nothing else inside, pickled peppers on a separate plate and fresh ayran alongside. We like tasting the meat without mixing other flavours into the wrap. You can choose your own additions; the separate peppers are part of our routine.

Choose it for: A plain döner wrap and ayran.

9. Korkmaz Büfe — Moda

Korkmaz Büfe on Moda Caddesi in Kadıköy

Korkmaz is a small, informal büfe on Moda Caddesi that we have also recommended in our writing about Caferağa. Its appeal is the familiar counter-style meal in the middle of a busy neighbourhood. Expect a simple stop rather than a long restaurant lunch.

Our suggestion is meat döner in bread with ayran. It suits a pause during a day in Moda, with time to watch the street before carrying on. There can be a queue at busy times, so allow a little flexibility.

Choose it for: An easy döner sandwich stop.

How to choose your döner order

A plain portion is the easiest way to focus on the meat, while bread and wraps change the balance of each bite. At 1971, the soft tırnak pide is central to our recommendation. At Barış Büfe, we prefer a plain wrap with peppers served separately. At Tatar Salim, we like the fuller restaurant meal around the döner.

For us, the important points are meat that keeps its moisture after slicing, a balanced amount of fat and bread that supports the filling. Compare portions by meat weight and included accompaniments when the menu provides them. Rice, drinks and extras can change the total considerably; we have left out fixed prices.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I eat döner near Kadıköy market?

Tatar Salim on İmamata Sokak is our first choice for a seated meal. 1971Döner on Nail Bey Sokak suits a quick sandwich, while Şimşek is convenient around Altıyol.

Where can I get döner in Moda?

Korkmaz Büfe on Moda Caddesi is our pick for a straightforward döner sandwich with ayran. It is a small counter-style stop.

What is the difference between dürüm, tombik and İskender?

Dürüm is a wrap in flatbread; tombik is a rounded bread used for a sandwich. İskender combines sliced döner with pieces of pide, tomato-based sauce, yoghurt and butter. Choose a plain portion if you want fewer elements around the meat.

Can I visit Emin Usta’s stall every day?

Do not assume daily service. Our recommendation comes from the Sahrayıcedit market stall, and the old weekly timetable has not been reconfirmed. Call the listed number to check the current day and location before setting off.

Are all these restaurants close to the ferry terminal?

No. The guide covers the whole district. Caddebostan, Suadiye, Şaşkınbakkal, Sahrayıcedit and Koşuyolu are separate neighbourhood outings. For a central visit, begin with Tatar Salim or 1971 and consider Korkmaz if you are heading into Moda.

Our choice

Start with Tatar Salim for a first döner meal in Kadıköy. If bread is part of the attraction, try 1971; if you are spending the day on Bağdat Caddesi, Barış Büfe is one of our repeat stops. For another meal in the district, our Kadıköy köfte guide and lahmacun guide give you different options. Tell us your own favourite döner stop in the comments.
