Ikemen Ramen São Paulo: Tonkotsu After a Long Flight

Before we had even checked into our hotel in São Paulo, we sat at the counter at Ikemen Ramen and ordered two bowls of tonkotsu: one classic, one spicy and red. After a long journey, the rich broth and substantial bowls were exactly the sort of meal we wanted.

The counter after the journey

We found Ikemen close to where we were staying in Paraíso. The open kitchen, counter seating and activity behind it reminded us of a compact ramen bar in Japan.

We sat directly in front of the kitchen. We were too tired to study every stage of the preparation, but could still enjoy the room’s energy and the food arriving across the counter.

The classic tonkotsu

The pale broth was rich and creamy, with a depth that made us happy we had chosen ramen as our first meal. Thin slices of pork belly, noodles with a good bite and an egg with a pleasing texture completed the bowl.

Those are observations from eating it, rather than a claim that we measured the kitchen’s stock-making time. We did not need a precise number of simmering hours to enjoy what was in the bowl.

The red, spicy bowl

The other bowl used chilli oil to add another layer to the tonkotsu. We felt that the heat complemented the broth rather than covering its character.

There were extra seasonings on the counter, including garlic and sauces. Our advice is to taste the broth first, then add whatever you want gradually so that the original balance remains clear.

Service helped when we needed it

When the team realised that we did not speak Portuguese, an English-speaking staff member came over to help. That practical detail mattered after the journey.

We were pleased with the service and the clean, orderly feel of the restaurant. The room was active, but our meal at the counter still felt comfortable.

A bowl we would return for

We have made ramen a recurring stop on many trips, and Ikemen left us glad we had kept that habit in São Paulo. Both the classic and spicy bowls were satisfying.

We would order either according to how much heat we wanted that day. Our recommendation is based on those two bowls; additional dishes visible in the archive are not a reason to claim a wider tasting.
