Best Chimney Cake in Budapest: 7 Places to Try
Looking for the best chimney cake in Budapest? Our own warm-cake stop was Pichler on Váci utca, where we waited for two unfilled cakes to bake and preferred the pistachio version. But your choice may depend on whether you want a café seat, a City Park dessert, a making workshop or a cone piled with ice cream.
This guide brings together seven addresses for kürtőskalács, the hollow, spiral-shaped cake with a caramelized sugar exterior. We tried Pichler and noted a price sign while passing Kürtissimo; the remaining entries are researched options from our Budapest selection. The numbers are for navigation, not a ranking of seven personal tastings.
Business information checked October 6, 2026. Our tasting and price observations below are from September 2026.

What is chimney cake?
Strips of yeasted dough are wrapped around a cylindrical mold and baked while turning. Sugar on the outside caramelizes; when the mold comes out, it leaves the hollow center that gives chimney cake its English name. Coatings such as cinnamon or walnut finish the surface.
You do not need to fill that hollow center. An unfilled cake lets you taste the soft dough against the sugar crust and pull it apart along the spiral. A cream- or ice-cream-filled version offers a different, more substantial dessert. For other sweets and dishes to try, see our Hungarian food guide.
1. Molnár’s Kürtőskalács: cake and coffee on Váci utca

Molnár’s gives you a café-style stop on Váci utca, with coffee alongside the cake and an open preparation area where guests can watch dough being shaped and baked. It is an option when you want to sit down between shopping and sightseeing.
The range extends from cinnamon, walnut and vanilla to poppy seed, raspberry and pistachio. Cream and ice-cream additions are available too. For a first taste, we would choose an unfilled classic: a simpler way to get to know the baked dough and its caramelized sugar coating.
What to order: Cinnamon or walnut chimney cake, with coffee.
Address: Váci utca 31, 1052 Budapest.

2. Édes Mackó by Vitéz Kürtős: a City Park dessert stop

Édes Mackó is Vitéz Kürtős’ chimney-cake patisserie near City Park and the zoo. It takes the guide beyond the central shopping streets and fits naturally into a day around Városliget.
The menu explores more than the hollow cylinder. KürtősBon adds a creamy filling, while Kürtős Fondue turns pieces of cake into a dipping dessert. If you already know the classic, these offer another way to try the dough. Choose the traditional cake when you want to concentrate on the outer coating; choose the fondue when dipping and sharing are part of the appeal.
What to order: Cinnamon or walnut chimney cake; Kürtős Fondue for a different format.
Address: Állatkerti körút 14–16, 1146 Budapest.

3. Pichler: the warm, unfilled cakes we tried

At Pichler’s Váci utca shop, we ordered two chimney cakes: one cinnamon-sugar, the other pistachio. They were baked after we ordered and arrived warm in about eight minutes. We added neither ice cream nor cream because we wanted to taste the dough and coating.
The cinnamon-sugar version tasted sweeter to us. We preferred the pistachio one, which felt less sweet on the palate. Pulling a strip from the edge and following the spiral was part of the pleasure: you gradually unwind the cake as you eat it.
Our receipt dated September 29, 2026 showed 2,200 HUF for the classic and 2,900 HUF for pistachio, totaling 5,100 HUF. These are our visit prices. We would return for the chance to eat the dough warm, straight after that short wait.

What to order: Unfilled pistachio or cinnamon-sugar chimney cake.
Address: Váci utca 46, 1056 Budapest.

4. Kató Néni Finomságai: a downtown cake-and-ice-cream option

The Downtown branch on Október 6. utca pairs chimney cake with ice cream. The business describes its dough as based on a family recipe, giving this central stop a story behind the rolling and baking.
Kató Néni also offers making workshops. If you are curious about how a strip of dough becomes a hollow cake, ask the business about the workshop location and date before making plans. The shop address here is for the Downtown branch; it should not be taken as a promise that every workshop happens there.
What to order: A classic chimney cake or an ice-cream version.
Address: Október 6. utca 6, 1051 Budapest.

5. Kürtissimo: the price sign that caught our eye

Kürtissimo on Király utca is convenient for a stop around Deák Ferenc tér. Its range includes traditional, cinnamon, cocoa, coconut, pistachio and raspberry coatings, with creams and gelato available to make a larger dessert.
Our note: walking past in September 2026, we noticed a 1,000 HUF price sign. It caught our attention for its affordability, but we did not try the cake. That observation belongs to the sign we saw then; it does not establish today’s price or mean that every coating, filling and ice-cream version cost the same.
What to order: Classic or cinnamon chimney cake; gelato if you want a filling.
Address: Király utca 6, 1061 Budapest.
Directions on Google Maps · Official website and current information
6. Mütyür Kürtőskalács: sweet and savory on Pozsonyi út

Mütyür extends the guide into Újlipótváros, on the Pest side of Margaret Bridge. The business offers sweet and savory, plain and filled versions, and says it bakes fresh throughout the day.
That makes your first decision the style of snack rather than just the coating. A sweet unfilled cake keeps attention on dough and sugar; a filled version is a bigger dessert. The savory choices take the same shape in another direction. Check the day’s selection when you arrive, especially if you are going for one specific variation.
What to order: A plain or filled sweet cake, or ask about savory options.
Address: Pozsonyi út 7, 1137 Budapest.

7. Chimney Cake Shop: ice-cream cones on Fashion Street

This entry covers the Fashion Street branch at Deák Ferenc utca 10. The brand has several central shops, so use the exact address when opening directions.
Alongside the classic cake, chimney cones turn the dough into an edible container for soft-serve ice cream. Vanilla or chocolate, with sauces and extra toppings, makes a fuller dessert than an unfilled cylinder. Choose it if the ice cream is part of what you want; for a closer look at the cake itself, begin with a simple coating.
What to order: Cinnamon chimney cake or a soft-serve chimney cone.
Address: Deák Ferenc utca 10, 1052 Budapest.

Chimney cake prices: what we paid and what we saw
| Place and item | Price | Our record |
|---|---|---|
| Pichler, classic cinnamon-sugar | 2,200 HUF | Receipt, September 29, 2026 |
| Pichler, pistachio | 2,900 HUF | Same receipt |
| Pichler, both cakes | 5,100 HUF | Total for our two unfilled cakes |
| Kürtissimo, displayed offer | 1,000 HUF | Sign noticed while passing in September 2026; not a purchase |
These are not like-for-like prices for identical sizes and toppings. Before comparing two counters, check the cake size, coating and whether cream or ice cream is included. Ask for the total with your chosen extras.
How we would choose a chimney cake
Start with temperature. At Pichler, waiting for our cakes to bake was part of what made the stop worthwhile. Ask when the next batch will be ready if you want a warm one.
Pay attention to the sugar crust and dough. We want a caramelized exterior and a soft, properly baked center. A coating should add flavor rather than leave every bite tasting only of sugar. At Pichler, comparing cinnamon-sugar with pistachio made that difference in perceived sweetness clear to us.
Decide on fillings before ordering. For a first taste, our choice would be cinnamon or plain sugar without a filling. For an ice-cream stop, a chimney cone may be exactly what you are after. Both have a place; they give you different things to compare.
Fit a sweet stop into your Budapest route
Molnár’s and Pichler are both on Váci utca. Fashion Street, Király utca and Október 6. utca offer other central options. Édes Mackó belongs more naturally to a City Park day, while Mütyür fits a walk around Pozsonyi út and the Pest end of Margaret Bridge.
We would choose one or two stops around the day’s plans rather than turn all seven into a single dessert marathon. Our Budapest food guide can help you put a savory meal before the sweet stop.
Frequently asked questions
Which chimney cake would we order first?
An unfilled cinnamon or plain-sugar version is a useful introduction. Of the two we tried at Pichler, we preferred pistachio because it tasted less sweet to us.
Does chimney cake always come with ice cream?
No. The hollow cylinder can be eaten with just its outer coating. Ice-cream-filled cones are another serving option.
How do you eat an unfilled chimney cake?
Pull at the edge of the dough and follow the spiral, breaking off strips as you go. A filled version may also need a spoon.
Where can you find chimney cake on Váci utca?
Molnár’s is at number 31. The Pichler shop we visited is at number 46. The Fashion Street branch of Chimney Cake Shop is nearby on Deák Ferenc utca 10.
Is the 1,000 HUF Kürtissimo price current?
It is a sign we noticed in September 2026, not a confirmed current price. We did not buy a cake there. Check which size and coating any advertised offer covers.
